    What is a Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow is the strain or tearing of the muscles that help to extend the wrist. It is a common elbow injury that is caused by the overuse of the muscles. The pain is typically experienced just below the area where the extensor muscles attach to the humerus. In more anatomical terms, distal to the lateral epicondyle.

What are some common Tennis Elbow Symptoms?

Tennis elbow symptoms include pain, tenderness, and swelling on the outer part of the elbow. Weak grip strength and discomfort during gripping or lifting are common signs. These symptoms worsen with repetitive arm movements. Seeking timely medical attention is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

How can I treat Tennis Elbow?

A tennis elbow brace can be used to reduce pain and provide support to those experiencing pain due to an overuse injury. These braces can also be used to reduce the strain on the muscle when undergoing higher risk activities which can help prevent further injury and promote healing.

Treat tennis elbow with RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) to reduce inflammation. Consult a healthcare professional for personalised advice, including corticosteroid injections or surgery if necessary.

How does a Tennis Elbow Brace work?

These braces work by applying pressure on the tendon of the extensor muscles close to its attachment point on the elbow. This adjusts the muscle mechanics which reduces the stress on the tendon an increases stabilisation. Some braces may also have a compressive feature which reduces swelling and promotes good blood flow which aids the tennis elbow treatment process.

Which Brace is right for me?

Healthcare providers, such as Orthotists, Physiotherapists, or GPs, assess patient profiles to determine the most appropriate tennis elbow support brace.

How do I know that the brace will fit?

The size guide will give a good indication on which sized brace will fit the best. The brace should fit snug to provide some compression but should not be too tight. Another indication is that there are minimal wrinkles or excess fabric.

How long should I wear a Tennis Elbow Brace?

The duration of wear depends on a variety of factors. Patient goals will greatly affect this. Individuals who wear a brace for prevention may only need to wear a brace during physical activity whereas individuals who require one for treatment of an injury may need to wear an elbow brace until healed.

How do I put on a Tennis Elbow Brace?

These braces need to be positioned correctly to have an effect. The easiest way to do this is to find the muscle that is being strained. This can be done by extending the 3rd digit and feeling for the muscle belly firing distal to the radial head. The gel pad or strap should be positioned on this muscle. The best way to ensure the brace is not too tight is to fasten the straps with the patient making a fist.

Can I still do sport with my Elbow Brace?

Yes! Many athletes wear tennis elbow braces during play to prevent further injury.

How do I take care of my Brace?

Most tennis elbow braces made of soft fabric that can be hand washed with soapy water. Some will be machine washable but please check care instructions.
